Booking choice: A Jeep Wrangler rental, from $280 per vehicle. Check dates Tour details
Aruba is an easy island to drive. It is about 20 miles long, traffic keeps to the right, and a normal rental car reaches the west coast beaches, the California Lighthouse and Baby Beach without trouble. The trouble starts at Arikok, where the Natural Pool sits at the end of a rocky track that only a 4x4 should try.
This guide sets the Jeep Wrangler rental on this site against the guided safaris: what each costs, what you sign up for, and who should leave the driving to someone else.
The quick answer
Rent if you are four or five confident drivers who want your own pace: the Wrangler is $280 per vehicle, so the cost per head drops close to a tour price. Take a tour if you are two, if the Natural Pool is the main goal, or if rough-track driving is new to you. Self-drivers also pay $22 per adult at the park gate, leave a $500 card deposit and buy their own gas.

Can you drive yourself to the Natural Pool in Aruba?
Yes, in a 4x4 with good clearance, on park roads and during park hours. Not in a normal car, and never in a UTV.
Aruba Playbook puts it bluntly: regular rental cars cannot make it. Visit Aruba lists 4x4, hiking and tours as the ways in. De Palm describes the last section as about a mile each way that “requires you to drive very carefully”. At the end you park and walk down about 100 steps to the water.
Read your rental contract first. Some firms ask customers to stay off the pool track, and off-road damage is exactly where a $500 deposit disappears.

How much does it cost to rent a jeep in Aruba?
The Wrangler listed here is $280 per vehicle for 8 hours, for up to five people, plus gas, a $500 card deposit and optional collision cover.
The 4-door Wrangler hardtop is collected a short walk from the cruise terminal: out of the main gate, left towards the CITGO station, across the street, and the jeeps stand next to the car wash. The listing adds a $15 extra charge at checkout. Collision damage cover (CDW) is offered at the desk; gas is not included.
Guests rate the handover well. One wrote: “The whole rental process was easy, from booking on the app, to finding the Jeep across the street from the Citgo at the car wash, to turning the Jeep back in at the end of the day.”
Here is how it compares per adult. Rental all-in means $280, the $15 charge and the $22 park pass for each adult, before gas and CDW:
| Group | Rental all-in | Per adult | AGW tour | ABC safari, all-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 adults | $339 | $170 | $89 | $124 |
| 4 adults | $383 | $96 | $89 | $124 |
| 5 adults | $405 | $81 | $89 | $124 |

Four doors, room for five, picked up by the cruise port. Cheapest per head when the car is full.
Explore a Jeep Wrangler rental Tour detailsDo you pay the Arikok park fee if you drive yourself?
Yes: $22 per adult at the gate, free for under-17s. It is sold only at San Fuego and Vader Piet, not online.
The San Fuego visitor center is open daily 8:00 to 15:30 and the Vader Piet booth daily 9:00 to 15:00 (Aruba Conservation Foundation). Get there early. The pool is calmer and quieter in the morning, and you want plenty of daylight for the track back.
The park rules apply to you as a driver: 20 km/h at most, stay on park roads and use marked parking, no drones, no pets, and leave every plant and rock where it is. Fines under the nature law go up to $100,000. More on the pass in the 2026 park fee post.
What are the roads like in Arikok National Park?
Paved to the visitor center, then dirt, loose rock and steep, rutted climbs. The track to the pool is the worst of it.
A guest on the private tour, who had driven the rest of the island herself in a rental car, put it this way: “we needed a 4 wheel drive to see anything in the north and seeing how rocky it was I’m glad i didn’t attempt to traverse alone.” An EZ Raider guest: “when they say it’s bumpy they mean it. Not a teeth rattler but close.”
If you do drive it, switch to 4WD before the rough stretch, crawl over the rocks, and leave a long gap behind other vehicles so the dust settles. Watch for goats on the track. Take more water than you think you need: there is nothing to buy at the pool.

What do you need to rent a jeep in Aruba?
A valid driving licence held for at least two years, a credit card for the deposit, and the minimum age, which is 21 to 25 depending on the company.
According to Visit Aruba, an international licence or any valid licence held for at least two full years will do. Minimum ages run from 21 to 25 and maximum ages from 65 to 70, by company. Aruba drives on the right. Insurance is strongly advised, and it is void if the driver is found to be under the influence after an accident.
The Wrangler needs a $500 deposit on a credit card, so bring one, not just a debit card. Cruise passengers get the jeep by the port for 8 hours. Plan the return well before all-aboard.
Pick up by the port, drive your own route, and hand the keys back before all-aboard.
Check dates for a Jeep Wrangler rentalWhat does a guided tour give you that a rental doesn't?
A driver who knows every rock, the park fee often included, snorkel gear, and a guide who explains what you are looking at.
Guides point out the bats in the caves, the Amerindian drawings in Fontein Cave and the safe way into the pool. An EZ Raider guest called the tour a “great way to see national park without worrying about rental.” A guest on the ABC island day added: “Could not have seen near as much stuff by trying to do this on our own.”
What you give up is freedom: a fixed schedule, 20 to 60 minutes at the pool and strangers on the bench next to you. The private tour removes the last of those.

No deposit, no gas, no map: $89 with the park fee, snacks and pickup from your hotel or the cruise port.

For families and groups, yes: your own truck and guide for 3 to 8 hours, from $212 per person, plus $22 per adult at the gate.
The private open-air tour from Around Aruba Tours runs 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 hours, with drinks, a bandana, snorkel gear and pickup included. The per-person price drops as the group grows. Its Arikok stop is marked admission not included, so budget for the gate.
One family of nine liked the pace: “We are a family of 9 from kids to grandma and our tour operator Jack really listened to what we wanted and paced us quite nicely.” A small catch from another guest: the driver sits in a closed cab and “can’t tell you about the different sights until he stopped.”
Your own truck and guide, your choice of stops, for 3 to 8 hours.

Rent if you are four or five, confident on rough ground and want a full day. Book a tour if you are two, short on time, or mainly after the pool.
- Rent the Wrangler if you have a full car, a confident driver who has done rough tracks before, and a plan that goes beyond the pool: the lighthouse, Baby Beach, a long lunch.
- Book a half-day tour if you are a couple, if your main goal is the Natural Pool, or if your rental contract rules out off-road driving.
- Mix them: a normal rental car for the west coast, plus a half-day safari for Arikok. Often the cheapest and least stressful combination.
- On a cruise day: AGW picks up at the terminal, and the rental lot is a short walk away. Either works; the tour leaves you less to worry about.
